WBSO stands for the Wet Bevordering Speur- en Ontwikkelingswerk (Research and Development Promotion Act) and reimburses part of the costs of R&D projects. The government rewards entrepreneurs who engage in innovation, and thereby take on financial risk. S&O (Speur- en Ontwikkelingswerk) is derived from the English R&D (research & development).
Through the WBSO grant, entrepreneurs engaged in the development or improvement of a product, service, or process may deduct 32% of wage costs and material costs from payroll or income tax. Material costs include, among others: costs for prototypes, test setups, machinery, or laboratories. In practice, utilizing the Research and Development Promotion Act for innovative projects can quickly yield a company thousands to tens of thousands of euros. A full-time R&D employee can even generate over €27.000 in grants per year.
Did you know that there is also fiscal benefit to be gained through the Innovation Box scheme, and it is often combinable with WBSO? This means that you pay less corporate tax on the portion of profits directly attributable to innovative products, projects, and services.
Additionally, for innovative projects, there are also schemes such as MIT Feasibility (for mapping out technical and economic risks) and MIT R&D Collaboration (specifically for collaborative ventures).
